Johnny Depp To Play The Riddler?

Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp is reportedly going to be a part of the next Batman installment playing the Riddler. And not only that, but execs want Philip Seymour Hoffman to play the Penguin.

Them, plus Christian Bale…talk about an all-star cast!

The Dark Knight has brought in $440 million worldwide so far, so they have their work cut out for them for the next Batman to be just as successful.

What do you think of Depp as the Riddler and Hoffman as the Penguin?

I wish they could get Jim Carrey to play the Riddler again.. i guess Johnny Depp will do but idk, i can't picture him playing the Riddler.. i think i love the idea of Hoffman for the Penguin
Posted by: Rizo on 07/31/2008 06:18 PM

Johnny Depp as the riddler could work, you never know with Nolan, he said Heath would be great and everyone doubted that, but look what it has become, and penquin, well NO.

balls to the penguin idea and johnny depp would be a grat adittion to the batman movies
Posted by: spuzmunkit on 08/01/2008 07:14 AM

I think the idea of pairing the penguin with the riddler fantastic! Too many people here seem to think though, that the portrayal of these villains will be like the ones from jím carrey and danny devito. Well folks, my guess is that if Nolan brings them back everyone will be totally stunned in what a direction this fabulous director pushes them. hey Depp for riddler would be great. To throw in another name: Viggo Mortensen.

Chris nolan wont do penguin, i read an article that said he was to comicy. and the penguin is a stupid character anyway. in my opinion. Johnny as Riddler, i dunno hard to say. I was reading that they want someone who can match or do better than Heath, sorry that wont happen, someone has to come in and not try to do better. Johnny is versatile but i cant see him as riddler, sorry.
Posted by: mtlycru86 on 08/01/2008 03:55 PM

the riddler is perfect they should no doubt bring back two face he only had 30 minutes of screen time as for catwoman they should hold off for a while but it would increase the conflict of the movie. the penguin maybe later but not right now.
Posted by: goodkat on 08/01/2008 06:13 PM

How 'bout Borat as the Riddler...LOL.
Posted by: giggy on 08/01/2008 06:15 PM

Johnny Depp? Are you serious? Are you talking the same Johnny Depp who was a cute kid in 21 Jump Street, and then got so deep into drugs that he let druggies deal in his bar. . . the same bar where his best friends little brother OD'd on heroin and died? If Johnny Depp is in this movie, I will have to say, NO WAY. I have enjoyed new Batman series of movies, but I won't go to anymovie with Depp involved in it. He leaves a filthy mark on everything he touches.

Johnny Depp as The Riddler sounds like a good choice to me, he's a great actor, if u look back on most of the characters he's played in movies they're really unique characters, especially the way Nolan's villians are portrayed as dark psycopaths, most of Depp's roles are weird and crazy, from edward scissorhands to jack sparrow, even secret window, he seems like a good choice, and for Philip Seymour Hoffman, he's a good actor and if u think about it who else would be better for the part of The Penguin? plus I don't think The Penguin will be as big a charater in this movie as The Riddler, just like Two-Face wasn't that big of a villian in The Dark Knight, he was Harvey Dent, a good guy, and at the very end he was Two-Face, but these are all just opinions
Posted by: Jacob on 08/01/2008 11:01 PM

Well The Johnny Depp as the riddler rumor sounds pretty sweet. On top of that the penguin could be logical saying that he is no longer a villain in the Batman universe he has become an informant, and because his intelligence they could bring him on not as a true penguin like person deformed at birth but an eccentric informant that helps Batman out with the Riddler's deadly puzzles, so i can see it happening like that, but any other way would be terrible. Nolan also in the past had said if possible he would like to throw the penguin in there somewhere but not as far fetched as he is in the books, and he originally was talking to Bob Hoskins for the role who had showed some serious interest in it, but Hoffman doesn't seem to work for me.
Posted by: MattyViolence on 08/03/2008 11:11 AM

Nolan has a large advantage in his film making, because he makes to films tangible, withdrawing any "camp" factor. It is a safe bet that the Riddler will be included in the third movie, but not just because of the admirable character strengths. Nolan probably realizes the Riddler offers a viral campaign he couldn't refuse...making "why so serious" a thing of the past. The Penguin is not suitable for the Batman universe, plain and simple.
Posted by: HEXREM on 08/03/2008 05:56 PM

Okay, a lot of you are idiots, straight up. People who say penguin and riddler is a good match, are wrong. Those of you who say catwoman might be a good choice, you are wrong as well. And those of you who think Johnny Depp would play a great Riddler are wrong for sure. Johnny Depp is a decent actor but he can kill a role if he takes it to seriously. Lets examine the once loved Captain Jack Sparrow, he was a good character until Johnny killed it. Johhny Depps voice and acting skills just don't fit the Riddler even though he does have some talent. No folks you're going to want an actor who can look outside the box, maybe Ed Norton, or even Crispin Glover, they might be good. See the reason Riddler is such a threat is because he is the only villian to ever discover batmans true identity, so this villian has to be taken somewhat seriously. I mean Johnny Depp as the riddler? I can see the dialog now. Riddler Depp: Eh batman, Riddle me this, riddle me that, you can have gotham and I get the pearl, savvy?"
Posted by: VulturesUnited on 08/04/2008 12:23 AM

how about john malkovich as the riddler?
Posted by: anonymous on 08/04/2008 12:41 AM

Depp to play Riddler would be good but do not like idea of Penguin or Catwoman in next installment of Batman movie. I would prefer to see some more big names added also.
Posted by: Besty on 08/04/2008 10:03 AM

Daniel Day-Lewis as the Riddler, enough said.
Posted by: ryan on 08/04/2008 06:37 PM

depp as riddler = No penguin = No Cat Women = Hell No. Crispin Glover as riddler = maybe Daniel Day-Lewis Riddler = maybe
Posted by: DarkKnight on 08/04/2008 09:46 PM

How about Paul Bettany as the Riddler? He was considered for the Joker back in the day, but I think he could do well as the Riddler too... I think they might do better to go with someone people won't expect- like they did with Ledger...
Posted by: billyshakes on 08/04/2008 11:15 PM

Johnny depp no doubt!!! , the penguin is the worst villian ever no doubt!!!
Posted by: nick salerno on 08/05/2008 06:37 PM

Couple of weeks ago, I said to some folks after I saw the movie that if they were to bring the riddler into Batman3, Johnny Depp is pitch perfect. Some people may disagree, but set aside your dislike for the man himself, but the roles he takes on I can not see other high profile actors in his league playing the roles he did. Some doubted Heath would play a good Joker, so no doubt in mind, I believe (trust) that Mr. Depp would do his best to live up to The Dark Knight's success. I know this guy wouldn't disappoint us. I love Johnny, he somewhat looks like and reminds me of my husband, and they're both Geminis!
Posted by: Janey Depp on 08/06/2008 12:04 AM

eeeeeeeeeexcellent !!!!!!!!! he's the man to play the riddler !!!!!!!! good luck Johnny !!!!!!!
Posted by: sue ellem on 08/06/2008 07:32 AM

i noticed that all you guys that don't like johnny choose actors similar to jim carrey to play the riddler. think of this: heath ledger is extremely different from the iconic jack nicholson version of the joker and he did a way better job than nicholson (i'm sure we all agree), now with johnny as riddler you can only expect a waaaaay better character than jim carrey did. so let's wait and see the movie...
Posted by: marley opre on 08/06/2008 09:00 AM

personaly, There hasnt been a role Depp has played and failed at, Like heath, Johnny depp gets really into his roles too, and I think hed be perfect for Riddler, as for Jim carry...Ridder was never supposed to be a Goofy Funny guy, I thought it was retarded. and as for penguin...I could care less.
Posted by: Martin on 08/06/2008 09:41 PM

Depp nails EVERY role he takes, regardless of how well the picture does. Him as the Riddler would be great. I am huge Johnny Depp fan, but even he will have to bring his A+ game to take on Heath's Joker.

I’ve been working out a script in my head that combines the following villains: Clock King, The penguin, the Riddler, Bane, Talia Al’Ghul. And, as a rival vigilante: Azriel Here’s the treatment so far: Film opens with Temple Fuget (The clock king) walking into a Gotham corporation in broad daylight. He’s spent weeks casing the place, and has a series of watches strapped to his arm set with timers counting down moments of movement, ie, he has every employee/security guard’s habits down to the second so he knows when they’ll take a leak or look away from his desk. This brazen robbery goes perfectly, until he stumbles upon a couple getting randy in a supply closet he ducks into. It’s a clock hand blade for those poor bastards. The Clock king makes into the CEO’s office just as the guy goes to piss, downloads files onto a jump drive and walks right out again. Meanwhile, in the narrows, we see a young man sitting in a dark, dreary apartment staring the wall. Suddenly the old, cracked TV set turns on revealing a wall of flames, a coin appears in the middle of the flames reading “St. Dumas”. A speaker recites rhetoric demanding the young man avenge those slain in the Clock King’s robbery, by decree of St. Dumas. The young man stands up, pulls his hood over his head and leaps from the window. The Clock King meets with the last of Gotham’s mobsters not arrested or slain by the Joker, delivers the flash drive and is paid handsomely. The mobsters depart, Clock King is on his way out when he runs into Azriel. CK is amused, thinking it’s Batman and at worse he’s going to jail; until Azriel pops his arm blade and informs CK that “he has him confused with someone else.” Azriel kills CK, fulfilling the cause of vengance, and disappears. Comissioner Gordon and his men show up to investigate the CK’s death. Gordon’s cops are all convinced it’s Batman but Gordon knows better. Batman and Gordon have a convo in the shadows (Gordon steps away, he’s started smoking since Two-face’s attack on his fam) and Batman pledges to find this new copycat killing bad guys. The mobsters take the CK’s stolen flash drive to the one man left in Gotham who can help them: Oswald Cobblepot. See, Oswald was a mobster, but was smart enough to launder money the right way and go legit. Publicly, at least. Just don’t call him “the penguin” or you get shot. The Mobsters have stolen a database of all Gotham’s corporate ventures across the board, including Wayne Tech. Scared by Batman (even more scared by the Joker) they have a new plan: mix their illicit fortune with corporate money, thereby “buying” majority shares in Gotham’s top companies and ergo, “buying Gotham.” The penguin lets them know he has the smarts to help them, if he gets something out of it. A deal is struck. The mayor, feeling public pressure, declares that since Batman is now seeming to kill on a whim, he can’t leave it up to Gordon’s discretion to bring the vigilante to justice. So he’s appointing a special investigator to track Batman down, a serial killer wiz who happens to have a knack for crossword puzzles and other newspaper brain-games. His name is Eddy LAST NAME and he’s been looking for a challenge like the Batman, whose motives are unknown, unfamiliar, original. Gordon thinks the guy is nuts. Final thread: Bruce Wayne has nothing but Batman left in his life. He sits in the cave under Wayne Manor 24/7 working overtime to both eradicate the remaining, warring mobs, the new crops of costume crazies springing up, and bring Batman up to the stature of a hero. It’s draining him, more than anyone would like to admit. One night in the gave Bruce has an ill feeling and starts tossing Batarangs into the shadows. Sure enough, ninja have invaded the gave, seemingly aware of the Bat/Bruce connection. A quick fight ensues until a pair of hands clap and the ninja fall back: Talia Al Ghul makes her entrance. She gives Bruce a speech about how her father groomed her to be his successor (until he met Bruce) and how the League of Shadows had a splinter cell known as the Order of St. Dumas. When Ra’as fell, The Order was activated as plan B, and Azriel was dispatched to Gotham (the Joker’s appearance expedited the League’s plan, as Gotham appeared to be producing the worst evil imaginable.) Talia was curios about Bruce and so came to see for herself who this 1 in a million man was: she explains that he is the only man EVER to carry out the fight for justice at sacrifice to all else in his life. Azriel she explains, is a programmed sleeper soldier, only-semi aware of his vigilante actions, controlled by syblminal suggestions (The “program”) inculcated in him by The Order. Talia’s motives remain unclear, leaving Bruce wary, but, attracted nonetheless. The rest I’m mapping out in my head but it involves The mob using the penguin’s contacts to hire Bane; Bats and Azriel having a physical/moral rivalry; Bane kicking the shit out of Batman; Azriel running around Goth

I like Depp as The Riddler and Hoffman as Penguin. He wouldn't be the Penguin like in Burton's. In fact, I think the penguin has already been established in Nolan's world. In marketing for TDK they had The Gotham Times, and one of the ads in there was for The Iceberg Lounge, a nightclub in Gotham. This Penguin would just be the owner of the club who does dealings with criminals. He and Batman would have a sort of give and take relationship. Batman would turn a blind eye to some of the Penguin's criminal doings in the club in exchange for information on certain criminals. I think it could work if done properly, meaning no flying umbrellas. Looking forward to seeing how things progress with this and if these rumors go anywhere.

Johnny is the best actor of the last 20 years. Anything that looks like a creative challenge, he will take on with a vengeance,(Sweeney aside, no pun intended). He's the most iconic of any out there, willing to take risks, to find something better to give the film audience different angles to any character. Those of you who disagree, just don't get it!!
Posted by: cindy myhra turner on 08/07/2008 11:33 AM

Johnny is the greatest, no doubt. As far as I'm concerned it's already in the can, I've seen it and he was brilliant, as usual. He never gets near enough credit for his acting ability as he deserves.

Can I just sya the Penguin is cool but he was mastered in Batman Returns and does not have the elements for this particular Batman sereis wich is dark and sinister. Jhonny Depp however would make a good Riddler

I love the idea of Deep playing the Riddler. Adding th Penguin in this film will kill it, especially with Hoffman.

johnny depp as the riddler, ALL GOD YES. i love him, he can play so meny roles and play em off with no problem. as for the penguin,Philip Seymour Hoffman "who". i dont care for the penguin part
Posted by: cheryl on 08/08/2008 05:19 PM

I think that depp was born for the roll of riddler.Besides after seeing hes acting in sweeny todd i think i could see riddler be a lil more crazy. To be onest i think if there thinking of taking a charecter out it should be robin.
Posted by: shane on 08/08/2008 08:15 PM

Johnny Depp is a wonderful actor in every movie he is in, but don't you think that would be to obvious to follow a great movie like Dark Knight? I think they need somebody that has strong features, that looks more intelligent rather than only looks. Maybe Adrian Brody from King Kong? He's darker, and a great actor that could carry the movie, and he's somebody different for a change. Also, I think Catwoman would be a great co-villian for the riddler...I was thinking that maybe they should have Scarlett Johannson play Catwoman because she's a temptress and a great actor. No more bad actors to follow Dark Knight...
Posted by: Kristen on 08/08/2008 11:07 PM

People are under the unfortunate delusion that the studio bosses are rarely wrong. The truth is, they are rarely right. Casting Mr.'D' as the riddler is an error in the making - and a costly one. Unless Warner's strategy is to go kid - friendly ala 'Pirates', this character calls for some dead serious demented brilliance. Look at how records were shattered with this latest outing; to the suits, I say stay the course and don't grab for the B O name draw with all the bells and shiny ribbons. There is only ONE performer today with the proven track record that WILL deliver on the emotionally tangled, yet mentally facile and creative Riddler. No disrespect to all the others, Brett Rickaby knocks 'em ALL out tha' box, ya heard? If you DON'T know, ya better ask somebody.

Think of everything Johnny Deep has done role wise in movies, to think he wld be anything short of great as The Riddler wld be insane.Hoffman is an awesome actor, The Penguin is just a beat role .
Posted by: levi on 08/09/2008 11:05 AM

johnny depp and hoffman would be intense as the riddler and penguin. Anyone who says otherwise isn't living a good life :)
Posted by: Gurrfuffull on 08/09/2008 11:08 AM

great ideas but not all that great!!!! nolan has said himself that he is not intrested in the penguin....PERIOD!!! as for the riddler... gary oldman has pointed out that it is very very strong canidate for a next installment.... but remember two-face is not dead!!! he is the main villan joker WAS supposed to be on trial throught the 3rd movie.... nolan has even stated it.... if depp was to be in the franchise... wait for it.... THE JOKER only depp could pull it off!! but joker would be good to end the series... mayby like the end of the first movie batman begins... just a callin card ... "I BELIEVE IN JOHNNY DEPP" JOKER IN BATMAN3... EVEN IF IT WERE JUST A SHORT CAMEO!!! PLEASE.... KEEP HEATHS LEDGERS JOKER TRUE AND ACCURATE.. BUT DONT TAKE IT AWAY FROM THIS.. HE WOULDNT HAVE PLAYED HIM IF HE KNEW THAT PEOPLE WOULD SAY... "NAH LEAVE JOKER OUTA IT, HEATH WAS TOOO GOOD" FUCK THAT!!! MIND YOU HE PROBABLIY WOULDNT HAVE PLAYED IT AT ALL IF HE KNEW WHAT WAS GONA BE THE OUTCOME!!!
Posted by: timo tea on 08/10/2008 08:09 AM

Regardless who they choose for the Riddler( if they even decide to do so), I'm sure it will be fantastic. It probably won't be as good as TDK but it will fit the series. One point I will mention is the fact that the Riddler discovers Batman's true identity...ummm what about the character in the movie who works for Wayne Interprises and attempts to reveal the truth. He will likely be the Riddler because not only does he know Batmans identity but now he has a reason to want to kill the citizens of Gotham. I mean they tried to kill him didn't they? And remember "what doesn't kill you only makes you stranger!"

Angeline Jolie as Cat Woman!
Posted by: TeraMascara on 08/10/2008 07:15 PM

I agree with marvel fan. When I saw that he found batman's identity out I connected him with the riddler as well. Also he works for Wayne enterprises, like jim carrey's riddler did. Although I'm not sure if they'll use the same actor, I haven't seen him in anything else to prove his abilites to pull off such a complex role, especially after Heath.

i believe that johnny depp can pull off pretty much anything…so why not the riddler…the pictures above ( to me ) should prove it…they both have that smirky smile…and if you follow depp’s acting career(like me), you will know he is one of the most versatile actors out there…who cares if he is well known…so was Heath Ledger(r.i.p)…i do agree with weird bob, the film should try and go in a different direction because its going to be hard to top the dark knight!…i hope the riddler comes a long somewhere in the batman series of this generation…John(the dude two spaces above me)...you suck...he does not leave a dirty mark on everything he touches...everything he touches turns into an award...hows that for dirty?!

without a doubt, depp would make an excelent riddler, and hoffman would perfect his role as the pengiun, but these are still nothing but rumors

Honestly, i have full convidence in Nolan, he has never led me astray thus far and not just with Batman. Not only that but Depp is like my favorite actor, i think he would be awesome as the Riddler. Im all for it. Feel free to toss in the penguin as a side guy, like two face to the Joker, but the Riddler should be the main focus.
Posted by: eric on 08/12/2008 06:25 PM

I think Casey Affleck would make the ideal riddler.

There is no doubt that the riddler or the penguine would be great in Batman 3 however maybe they should go a different direction and introduce some new characters. IE mad hatter it would be a breath of fresh

Jhonny he is great , he can play any roll he could ,ve done the joker as well, he can do the riddler i have no doubt about it he is great ...but i think that they can do another movie with a joker and Jhonny sould play it very well..he 'd do it even better than the dark knight one .
Posted by: Israel on 08/14/2008 05:56 AM

EEEEEEEEEEEK JOHNNY DEPP!!! He shoud definitely play this part. He is such a brilliant actor. I wish Heath wouldn't have passed away though, cuz there could've been this epic battle between batman and the joker again. Heath Ledger will definitely be missed.

hey Logan...John (the dude 2 spaces above you) doesn't suck, he's regurgitating what "Anonlurker" said...read all the comments please
Posted by: Leo on 08/14/2008 08:04 AM

Haha i've been reading some people's responses to this. Wow you people are smart critics. Lol Ed Norton? Crispin Glover? I'm sorry but I don't see that as a better replacement. You guys obviously don't watch Johnny Depps acting as much as I have. He doesn't bring his character from another movie into another movie. Pirates of the carribean depp playing the riddler? doesn't make sense. I see this as a perfect role. Depp is super creative. GREAT ROLE FOR HIM.
Posted by: Jake on 08/15/2008 12:27 AM

Johnny Depp would do a good job as the Riddler, he does an amazing job researching his roles and making the character his own. However, I believe Hugo Weaving was born for the role of the Riddler. Weaving has an air of superiority about him when playing Elrond in LOTR that is a must for the riddler and he has shown in V for Vendetta that he can pull off complicated and quick paced rhetoric. Hoffman as the Penguin doesn't seem like such a great match, but you never know. In all honesty I can't picture anyone playing the role of the penguin well, at least not the type of penguin Nolan would want for his film.
Posted by: klohse on 08/16/2008 09:01 AM

Also, the villain pool for Nolan's style of Batman is limited but two characters that are less known but fit the current themes are Black Mask and Anarky. Black Mask is a Ra's al Ghul-esque character and Anarky is a teenage prodigy who hates the government, he is more or less a good guy just very violent. Anarky could make for an interesting moral battle inside of Batman. Just a thought.

Not so sold on depp as the riddler But super super sold on hoffman as the penguin. And sorry to those who belive the penguin is a bad idea u guys are not batman fans here is what I think johnny depp as the next joker would be perfect hoffman as the penguin and I want to see the comic book Mr.Freeze on the big screen not the one aronld S destroyed
Posted by: Big Gabe on 08/16/2008 02:06 PM

Depp as riddler would be great>. i would hope to see a darker version tho and not some attempt to recreate the crap that jim carrys batman forever riddler was.
Posted by: nojomo on 08/16/2008 05:13 PM

Depp as riddler would be good. But I would make him the joker no one could possibley reaplase heath but Depp would be better as joker than the riddler and dont think they should do pengwin yet because if they do then there will be 3 different villains to face because its also a rummer that angaliena jolie will be playing catwomen.
Posted by: nicholy on 08/17/2008 11:03 PM

Also I hink that it would be a good idea to put the joker in again because at this point we dont know a single about the joker and I persinaly would love to better undertand the joker.
